As we watch our horses just being horses, we can truly appreciate their intrinsic value. They are awesome creatures to behold. We are often awestruck by their bravery and their loyalty to each other and we are inspired daily by their intelligence, curiosity and playfulness.

We feel we are indebted to these magnificent beings. So, on behalf of mankind, Refuge RR is giving back that which should never have been taken away, their freedom, and providing them with the protection that is owed to them.

Semaine 1:

> Ca fait aujourd’hui une semaine que je suis né, ¡Quel bonheur d’être arrivé dans ce monde!

> Mois 01:

> Ma maman s’occupe très bien de moi. C’est une maman exemplaire.

Mois 02:

> Aujourd’hui j’ai été séparé de maman. Elle était très inquiète et m’a dit adieu du regard. En espérant que ma nouvelle “famille humaine” s’occupera aussi bien de moi qu’elle l’a fait.

> Mois 04:

> J’ai grandi vite, tout m’attire et m’intéresse. Il y a plusieurs enfants à la maison, ils sont pour moi comme des “petits frères”. Nous sommes très polissons, ils me tirent la queue, et je les mords pour jouer.

Mois 05:

> Aujourd’hui, ils m’ont disputé. Ma maîtresse m’a grondé parce que j’ai fait “pipi” à l’intérieur de la maison, mais ils ne m’ont jamais dit où je devais le faire. En plus je dors dans la réserve… et je ne me plaignais pas!

> Mois 12:

> Aujourd’hui j’ai eu un an. Je suis un chien adulte. Mes maîtres disent que j’ai grandi plus qu’ils ne le pensaient. Qu’est-ce qu’ils doivent être fiers de moi !
Mois 13:

> Aujourd’hui, je me suis senti très mal. Mon “petit frère” m’a pris ma balle. Moi je ne lui prends jamais ses jouets. Alors je lui ai reprise. Mais mes machoires sont devenues fortes et je l’ai blessé sans le vouloir. Après la peur, ils m’ont enchaîné, je ne peux presque plus voir le soleil. Ils disent qu’ils vont me surveiller, que je suis un ingrat. Je ne comprends rien à ce qui se passe.

> Mois 15:

> Plus rien n’est pareil… je vis sur le balcon. Je me sens très seul, ma famille ne m’aime plus. Ils oublient parfois que j’ai faim et soif. Quand il pleut, je n’ai pas de toit pour m’abriter.
Mois 16:

> Aujourd’hui, ils m’ont fait descendre du balcon. J’étais sûr que ma famille m’avait pardonné et j’étais si content que je sautais de joie. Ma queue bougeait dans tous les sens. En plus, ils m’emmènent avec eux pour une promenade. Nous avons pris la direction de la route et d’un coup, ils se sont arrêtés. Ils ont ouvert la porte et je suis descendu tout content, croyant que nous allions passer la journée à la campagne. Je ne comprends pas pourquoi ils ont fermé la porte et sont partis. “Ecoutez, attendez !” Vous… vous m’oubliez. J’ai courru derrière la voiture de toutes mes forces. Mon angoisse grandissait quand je me rendais compte que j’allais m’évanouir et qu’ils ne s’arrêtaient pas : ils m’avaient oublié.

Mois 17:

> J’ai essayé en vain de retrouver le chemin pour rentrer à la maison. Je me sens et je suis perdu. Sur mon chemin, il y a des gens de coeur qui me regardent avec tristesse et me donnent un peu à manger. Je les remercie du regard et du fond du coeur. J’aimerais qu’ils m’adoptent et je leur serais loyal comme personne. Mais ils disent juste “pauvre petit chien”, il a dû se perdre.

Mois 18:

> L’autre jour, je suis passé devant une école et j’ai vu plein d’enfants et de jeunes comme mes “petits frères”. Je me suis approché et un groupe, en riant, m’a lancé une pluie de pierres pour “voir qui visait le mieux”. Une des pierres m’a abîmé l’oeil et depuis je ne vois plus de celui-ci.

> Mois 19:

> Vous ne le croirez pas, mais les gens avaient plus pitié de moi quand j’étais plus joli. Maintenant je suis très maigre, mon aspect à changé. J’ai perdu mon oeil et les gens me font partir à coup de balais quand j’essaie de me coucher dans un petit coin d’ombre.

Mois 20:

Je ne peux presque pas bouger. Aujourd’hui, en essayant de traverser la rue où circulent les voitures, je me suis fait renverser. Je pensais être dans un endroit sûr appelé fossé, mais je n’oublierai jamais le regard de satisfaction du conducteur qui a même fait un écart pour essayer de m’écraser. Si au moins il m’avait tué ! Mais il m’a éclaté la hanche. La douleur est terrible, mes pattes arrières ne réagissent plus et je me suis difficilement iré vers un peu d’herbe au bord de la route.

Mois 21:

> Cela fait 10 jours que je passe sous le soleil, la pluie, sans manger. Je ne peux pas bouger. La douleur est insupportable. Je me sens très mal, je suis dans un lieu humide et on dirait même que mon poil tombe. Des gens passent, ils ne me voient même pas, d’autres disent “ne t’approche pas”. Je suis presque inconscient, mais une force étrange m’a fait ouvrir les yeux… la douceur de sa voix m’a fait réagir. Elle disait “Pauvre petit chien, dans quel état ils t’ont laissé”… avec elle il y avait un monsieur en blouse blanche, il m’a touché et a dit “je regrette madame, mais ce chien ne peut plus être soigné, il vaut mieux arrêter ses souffrances”. La gentille dame s’est mise à pleurer et a approuvé.
Comme je le pouvais, j’ai bougé la queue et je l’ai regardé, la remerciant de m’aider à trouver enfin le repos.
Je n’ai senti que la piqûre de la seringue et je me suis endormi pour toujours en me demandant pourquoi j’étais né si personne ne me voulait.
La solution n’est pas de jeter un chien à la rue, mais de l’éduquer. Ne transforme pas en problème une compagnie fidèle. Aide à faire prendre conscience et à mettre fin au problème des chiens abandonnés.

Si tu effaces ce message et ne l’envoie pas à tes contacts, tu n’a pas de coeur et tu n’en as vraiment rien à faire des animaux.

Stop The Omak Suicide Race!

Next Scheduled Cruelty: August 6 – 9, 2009 – Letters And Phone Calls Needed

The Omak Suicide Race is the most disgusting part of the Omak Stampede, a rodeo held in a small town in eastern Washington since 1935. The race regularly and routinely kills horses. Just since 1984, there have been at least 20 documented horse deaths.
After a galloping start, horses plunge over an almost vertical drop (62 degree angle) of about 225 feet. The horses do not realize where the ground is until it is rushing beneath them. They cannot see horses ahead of them. This is not professional riding or racing. This is documented cruelty as riders have a “no holds barred*” mentality that forces horses onward to win AT ANY COST. Horses are pushed to breakneck speed, with inevitable collisions and pile ups that cause serious injury or death. And that’s just the first leg.
At the bottom of the downhill charge, the horses are pushed to survive the swift current of the rocky, deep Okanogan River. Horses may have already sustained injuries from the steep downhill run of this race and then must brave the waters; horses have panicked and drowned. If they land sideways, which happens frequently if they lose balance, they can wrench their necks, causing severe neck and back injuries and further trauma. It takes far more energy to move through water than to gallop on land.
Exhausted horses are pushed on to an uphill sprint another 500 yards. With this continuous overexertion, recovery is nearly impossible, and with reduced oxygen flow, muscles are doomed to permanent damage. The psychological trauma endured by the horses who are injured or survive is lifelong.

The Omak Stampede has tried to separate itself from the Suicide Race. But in the Suicide Race Rules, which must be signed by participants, it clearly requires the Omak Stampede, Inc., to be included in news releases. Part of the race purse money comes directly from the Omak Stampede Committee.  Some sponsors, such as Wal-Mart and Crown Royal, have withdrawn their support completely. But the Omak Stampede has directed sponsors such as Coors Beer, Pace Picante Sauce, and Wrangler Jeans to declare that the Stampede and Suicide Race are unrelated events and has convinced these sponsors to continue their sponsorship. Furthermore, official merchandise, logos, and even letterhead of the Omak Stampede feature the Suicide Race. See for yourself at http://www.omakstampede.org/.

Dear Mr. Wiseman:
Wrangler Jeans is sponsoring the Omak Suicide Race and Stampede, a barbaric event which has killed at least 20 horses in the past 25 years.
We ask that Wrangler Jeans drop its sponsorship of the Stampede until it ends the “Suicide Race.”
The organizers of this event have many excuses, but none withstand scrutiny. For example, the Stampede says that it does not run the Suicide Race, but the Stampede’s web site markets the race.  The Stampede says that the race is a traditional native event, but that is untrue; the Native Americans did not race horses off this cliff at night, causing so many deaths and injuries. And, if that were really the genesis of this event, why is not limited to Native Americans?
The very name, “Suicide Race,” tells us what they are selling. Does Wrangler Jeans really want to be associated with this?
Wal-Mart and Crown Royal have pulled their sponsorships. Please follow their humane lead and do the same.

I am writing to you regarding the Omak Suicide Horse Race. This event of the Omak Stampede is surely a “business draw” for your community. Sadly, however, the money and entertainment value come from cruelty and inhumane exploitation of horses.
Pitbull fighting has been banned from all 50 states due to the inhumane and gruesome exploitation of dogs. The Suicide Race is much like the pitbull fighting in its cruel use of horses.
I urge you to be a leader and change your community’s direction. Many people are learning about this gore-seeking, pointless event called the Suicide Race. Your community will be under scrutiny and will have to answer the question: why sponsor an event that brings out the cruel, thrill-seeking, ugly side of humanity? This Suicide Race, by name, is selling death for thrills; this is NOT an American value nor a Native American value.
Please consider ways to transition your community away from the distorted and shameful focus on gore and cruelty that is the Suicide Race to truly honorable and respectable FAMILY entertainment. There are other options for drawing business to your community.
